ONE COMMUNITY TRAIL

Feasibility Study

WELCOME! WE’RE GLAD YOU FOUND US.

What is this project?

This project will analyze the proposed “One Community Trail“. We are performing a “feasibility study”, which means we are reviewing constructability challenges for the proposed trail network. We will answer questions like:

  • What side of the road should the trail be on?
  • How should the trail cross each road, and where?

We are collaborating with North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) on this project. The Integrated Mobility Division and the project team will review these trails together.

We will be building on our previous planning efforts by the City / MPO. We want to create connections that make our streets safer for everyone — and we need your help to do so.

WHERE ARE THE PROPOSED TRAILS?

The One Community Trail is envisioning a network of 10-foot-wide sidepaths covering 12.5 miles. It will connect with existing trails, or sidewalks, and follow along major corridors, including:

  • US 17 BUS (N Marine Blvd)
  • NC 53 (Western Blvd)
  • Piney Green Rd
  • Commerce Rd
  • Jacksonville Pkwy
  • Hargett St
  • Country Club Rd
  • McDaniel Dr

What are we doing with this Plan?

The One Community Trail aims to do what it says—help Jacksonville become One Community. This means keeping people safe, connecting people to opportunities, and expanding Jacksonville’s transportation options.

The One Community Trail will:

  • Make it safer to walk or bike along major streets in Jacksonville.
  • Connect vulnerable communities to opportunities. This includes education, recreation, and health care.
  • Give the people of Jacksonville more choices about how they travel between destinations.

Why do this now?

This project is a feasibility study, an important step between planning (phase 1) and engineering design (phase 2), before construction (phase 3) can occur. A feasibility study answers questions such as:

  • What side of the road will the trail be on?
  • How will the trail cross roads, and where?
  • Will utilities be impacted or avoided by the trail?

If we review these trails now, we may find unexpected problems or unique solutions that save Jacksonville time and money in the future.

OUTREACH AND EVENTS

There are so many ways for you to get involved!

Public Survey

Do you live, work, play, or travel in Jacksonville or near these roads? Maybe you don’t now, but would like to?

If so, we would love to hear from you! Your knowledge is a valuable resource. We want to hear about the issues, challenges, and opportunities you see. This survey should only take about 10-minutes to complete. Please also share with your friends, family, and neighbors.

Interactive Map

The interactive map allows you to show us places that need attention—both good and bad! On the map, you’ll be able to leave comments about problem areas and points of interest. Unlike the survey, the map will tie your comments to specific locations. This helps us visualize where the challenges and opportunities are!
